EPB regulations then require you to provide a complete ventilation system. This can be achieved by incorporating ventilation grilles into your new windows. But how do you ensure proper ventilation?
During renovations, a minimum of ventilation provisions is required to improve indoor air quality. The exact ventilation requirements depend on the type of renovation and the type of space. Ventilation grilles must be installed in all dry areas, such as bedrooms or the living room, except in the kitchen and bathroom, known as wet areas. Extracting air from wet areas creates negative pressure in the house. Fresh air is then brought in through the ventilation grilles in other rooms.
How many ventilation grilles do I need?
The minimum required design airflow depends on the type of space and its floor area. In extensive renovation projects, an EPB report designer is typically appointed to compile the requirements. The number of ventilation grilles for residential properties varies depending on the room size and the airflow capacity of the grilles. The requirement tables for each application year outline the minimum ventilation provisions.
Are there any disadvantages to installing ventilation grilles?
Indeed, ventilation grilles require an investment. However, other ventilation solutions are often much more expensive. Additionally, not everyone finds window grilles aesthetically pleasing, even though they are not very conspicuous. Ventilation grilles may not provide a perfect solution for noise and drafts, as they create a thermal bridge in the window. However, these drawbacks do not outweigh the benefits they offer for the indoor environment.
